چکیده
Dieta.—Male Wistar rats were placed on a semi synthetic diet at weaning, and the food consump tion of each was measured. A week later each rat was paired with one of equal body weight and food consumption. At this time one rat of each pair was designated as the experimental rat which would receive a tumor transplant; the other rat, his pair fed control, consumed the amount of diet eaten by the experimental rat. Six days after pairing, the

The competitive effect of canavanine on utilization of arginine in growth of Walker carcinosarcoma 256 cells in vitro.
Accordingly, it was of interest to study argininecanavanine relationships in actively multiplying tumor cells. Arginine has been shown to be essen tial for the growth of the Walker carcinosarcoma 256 in vitro (8) ; and, with the recent developments in tissue culture (9, 11) in this laboratory, it was possible to study the effects of canavanine on argi nine metabolism during tumor cell growth. The urinary excretion of allantoin and uric acid was greatly increased in rats bear ing Walker carcinoma 256. The increase was greater with more advanced tumor growth. A similar increase was also observed in the allantoin concentration of the plasma and liver of these rats. An increase in the RNA and DNA content and a decrease in the RNA/DNA ratio were found in the muscle of the tumor-bearing a...

Progressive growth of the Walker carcinoma @56 produces a caloric deficit in young adult, male, albino rats. The excessive expenditure of calories is not due solely to decreased food intake, for tumor-bearing rats lose more calories than do pair-fed noncancerous rats of the same age, sex, and initial weight. This result was anticipated by a previous report that rats in which the Walker tumor gr...

Walker 256 carcinoma was injected into the thighs of control, sham-pinealectomized, and pinealectomized Sprague-Dawley rats weighing between 40 and 50 grams. The pinealectomized group had statistically significant shorter survival times, larger tumor diameters, and more extensive metastases than the control and sham-pinealectomized groups. Pineal cells of rats that had died of tumor had more ve...
متن کاملAn experimental study of necrosis in tumors.
Factors that regulate the amount of viable tumor an animal can support have been studied in rats bearing Walker carcinoma 256. There is a maximum amount of viabletumor an animal can support, but continued growth of tumor resulting in increase in the amount of necrotic tumor occurs until death of a rat bearing Walker carcinoma 256. The number and location of tumors in an animal do not significan...
